The one that you are probably the most familiar with is chlorine. Chlorine is one of the primary spa chemical sanitizers used in some importance, as well as hot tubs, however it is used in a different concentration and hot tubs. You can use chlorine that comes in a tablet form or in a granule that is created specifically for hot tub use.
There is a chlorine alternate, it is called bromine. Bromine can be added to your hot tub in the form of tablets, nuggets, or granules. One form of bromine is called sodium bromide. This form of bromine needs to be activated with an oxidizer also called a shock. There is another form of bromine that is self activated and it is a chlorine bromine combination. The bromine is a great choice over chlorine because it produces fewer owners, and it works in a wide range of pH levels.
Another sanitizer that works like chlorine and bromine but contains neither is called Biguanide. Biguanide kills bacteria by attacking the cell wall. This system produces fewer owners like chlorine and even bromine, and does not gas off at spa temperatures.
Ozone is an oxidizer and not a sanitizer, ozone helps to read dues amount of work that sanitizers need to do, and therefore lowers the level of sanitizers needed to keep your hot clean. Not all hot tubs can utilize ozone. Only hot tubs equipped with an ozonator, can use ozone. Ozone is compatible with bromine, chlorine, and biguanide.
Another system you can use to assist, but not entirely replace your sanitizers is mineral spa care. Mineral spa care cartridges are usually placed inside filter cartridge and are contained in a floating dispenser that will slowly release into the hot tub water over time. Many people opt to use mineral spa care because it dramatically lowers the amount of sanitizers such as chlorine and bromine that you need to use to keep your hot tub water clean. A good method to keep your hot tub clean is to use a filter wrote a method. This allows you to always keep a clean filter ready to go. Keeping the chemistry in your hot tub correct is important and hot tub supplies or hot tub chemicals are needed to keep the water consistent. You should also drain your water every 3 to 4 months, depending on usage. While drained, make sure you clean the walls of the tub with bleach and water to kill any bacteria that may grow. Clean your filter every month and more frequently with more frequent usage. There are many online stores that sale discount hot tub supplies and offer free shipping. Cheap is always better in my opinion.
In the initial treatment of fresh water, let the water reach 80 degrees Fahrenheit before you start adding any hot tub supplies and chemicals. The warm water will help the granular chemicals dissolve. First test the pH level of the water with a testing strip. Adjust the pH by using pH up or pH down, and wait 30 minutes before retesting the pH. Then use a protective product to help keep the water clear and protect the metal parts within the unit. Using an enzyme product will also help keep the water clear and reduces scum-lines and odors cause by the natural oil in the skin.
To sanitize the spa water, you will need to choose one of the three hot tub supplies: 2-part bromine system, a bromine tablet, or a granular chlorine system. Test your spa water weekly to make sure you have a proper sanitizer level; if you are using an ozonator you can keep the bromine or chlorine level low. With an ozonator you spa will use less of the sanitizer because the ozone is killing most of the bacteria.
